Since the First Millennium A.D. hats have had a big statement in fashion. People from all classes and all regions wore hats. Wearing a stylish or hat made a statement of rank, elegance, or self-esteem. Wearing a hard helmet showed that you were in the military. All different kinds of hats showed what position you stood in society. But it wasn't all just about the hats, during all of the centuries the way a women or man styled their hair showed just as much about their position as hats did. Men and women both wore their hair long which is different from today because we see a lot of men with their hair worn short. As our world develops so does the fashion of hats. Hats today aren't always worn to prove a ranking, in fact they aren't really worn that way at all today. Many people wear hats to block the sun or if bald to protect from sunburns. Hats today are worn for comfort and not status, besides events where you are judged on your hat like the Kentucky Derby. Overall, throughout the centuries the meaning of hats have changed from based on status and class, to comfort and protection.
